Video Shows Caravan Throwing Rocks At Border Patrol Before Tear Gas

Video on Twitter shows refugees from the caravan throwing rocks at border patrol agents just before being tear gassed

  • Wendy Fry tweeted out a short video showing a few people throwing rocks

  • Customs and Border Protection claim agents were injured by objects thrown

  • San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer asked for leaders to solve the migrant crisis safely

Video from Wendy Fry on Twitter shows several refugees from the caravans throwing rocks just before border patrol agents began firing rubber bullets and tear gas at groups that included women and children.

The caption with Fry’s tweet — which has received over 1.1 million views — reads, “Here’s moment right before shot bang. You can see some rocks being thrown.” Four to five refugees are seen throwing rocks over a wall at the San Ysidro port of entry.

Following the confrontation between the caravan and border patrol agents, San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer tweeted the need for US and Mexican federal leaders to resolve this migrant crisis safely. Faulconer pointed out that San Diego’s “way of life” relies upon a “safe, secure and functioning border.”

It is critical that U.S. and Mexican federal leaders work together to safely resolve the migrant crisis. Our way of life relies on a safe, secure and functioning border. From travel to shipping to daily commutes between San Diego and Tijuana, it is essential to our community.

The US Customs and Border Protection also sent out a tweet following the clash defending their actions at the border. According to the CBP, tear gas was used after migrants threw “projectiles” at agents. In the tweet, CBP claimed several agents were injured by objects being thrown.

Today, several migrants threw projectiles at the agents in San Diego. Border Patrol agents deployed tear gas to dispel the group because of the risk to agents’ safety. Several agents were hit by the projectiles. The situation is evolving and a statement is forthcoming.

Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen backed the CBD in a statement released on Sunday.

After being prevented from entering the Port of Entry, some of these migrants attempted to breach legacy fence infrastructure along the border and sought to harm CBP personnel by throwing projectiles at them. As I have continually stated, DHS will not tolerate this type of lawlessness and will not hesitate to shut down ports of entry for security and public safety reasons. We will also seek to prosecute to the fullest extent of the law anyone who destroys federal property, endangers our frontline operators, or violates our nation’s sovereignty.

President Donald Trump took to Twitter as well to reaffirm that refugees would not be allowed into the country illegally. In the tweet, Trump said migrants would not be allowed into the country until each person is “individually approved in court.” The problem with Trump’s statement is that America is currently not even letting the migrants apply for asylum to begin that process.

Migrants at the Southern Border will not be allowed into the United States until their claims are individually approved in court. We only will allow those who come into our Country legally. Other than that our very strong policy is Catch and Detain. No “Releasing” into the U.S…

Following a chaotic attack on the refugee caravan at the San Ysidro by law enforcement, there is still jumbled information being passed around social media. One claim is that a young girl was killed by either a rubber bullet or tear gas, both of which were used in today’s attack.

On Sunday afternoon, Marco OctavioRafael Amaral Valencia made a post on Facebook claiming a girl was pronounced dead after being hit by tear gas and a rubber bullet.

Tear gas and rubber bullet hits girl. Girl is pronounced dead.

Border report.

Anger. Tears. Sorrow.

Valencia later deleted the post, most likely due to a lack of confirmation. That was not the only claim of a young girl being hurt by today’s attack. The Facebook page Movimiento Cosecha claims a young girl was in critical condition due to the tear gas.

UPDATE: We are currently confirming the condition of the girl struck by the tear gas. We will update this post when we get the most accurate information. We apologize for the confusion.

🚨 Migrants and peaceful protesters were targeted by US tear gas leaving one young girl in critical condition. Children had their eyes washed out with unsanitary water. Reports of sound cannons being used. All while peaceful migrants are forced to wait in line and being denied entry for their asylum cases. #Migrant Exodus

There has been nothing else to confirm the report of a child critically injured or killed in today’s confrontation. A 26-year-old Guatemalan citizen who had a 3-year-old and a 5-year-old with her was confirmed to have been injured after falling on pieces of rebar while trying to climb a fence.

A Facebook video from Ingrid Chapman shows children wiping their faces after the tear gas had been fired. There is no official number of how many refugees were injured in Sunday’s melee. Videos and pictures have confirmed that tear gas was fired at countless women and children.

Instead of setting up a viable system for refugees from the Honduran caravans to apply for asylum — which is the proper legal protocol — the scene at the San Ysidro port of entry between Tijuana and San Diego has turned to chaos.

A video uploaded by Jasmin Natalie shows law enforcement firing tear gas and rubber bullets at the unarmed caravan that includes women and children. In Natalie’s video, children can be heard screaming and crying. As the video ends, a man is seen running while carrying a child as the group tries to get away from the incoming tear gas.

Trigger warning:

The caravan is under attack. Folks have been tear gassed and rubber bullets have been used towards the refugee caravan. You hear in the video someone screaming “please cover the children.” This is horrible.

Another video from Odilon Garcia shows a group from the caravan running across the border as two law enforcement officers in riot gear appear to be chasing the group with pepper spray. The scene at the border is an overall shit show due to poor planning all around.

US Customs and Borders Protection have decided to shut down roads and pedestrian bridges going both ways at the San Ysidro port of entry. San Ysidro is one of the largest land border crossings between San Diego and Tijuana, Mexico.

Around 500 migrants were heading towards the US border when the decision was made to close the port of entry. The crowds are reportedly made up of men, women and lots of children. The migrants were said to have overwhelmed federal and local Mexican police blockades before rushing towards the border wall.

San Diego KGTV’s Rina Nakano was livestreaming from the San Ysidro border when two loud bangs near the area. The bangs were believed to be either flash bangs or tear gas, but Nakano was too far away to be sure. Helicopters could be heard and seen in the background.

There has been much confusion engulfing the refugee caravans in the weeks leading up to today. The Trump administration appeared to use the caravans as a political tool during the midterm elections which ended in sending thousands of troops to the Texas border and the creation of Camp Base Donna.
