The Moore, Oklahoma Police Department released body cam footage of former Republican State Senator Ralph Shortey caught in a hotel room with a 17-year-old boy.
The incident occurred on March 9 at a Super 8 Motel in Moore. Police responded to a welfare check placed by the teenage boy’s father. Footage shows Shortey answering the door and a police officer asking “What’s going on with you man?”
Shortey – I’m just… trying to have a…
Police Officer – A good time?
Shortey – A good evening.
Police Officer – Yeah?
Police say they smelt cannabis outside of the room, and later discovered a small amount along with condoms and lotion in Shortey’s backpack.
Shortey – I’m sorry guys, you’re kinda freaking me out a little bit.
Police Officer – Yeah, that’s what we do. He’s 17!
Shortey – Okay.
Police Officer – What do you mean okay?
Shortey – I didn’t know (inaudible).
Police Officer – Oh, okay. You gotta a 17-year-old hanging out with ya.
Shortey – I mean…
Officer – Dad’s worried. You understand that?
Shortey – Yeah, I didn’t know…
Police Officer – K, you got an id on you?
Is He Really 17
As Shortey gets up to get his id, he asks the officer, “Can you show me that he’s only 17?” The officer laughs and replies, “No. I can’t. But I can convince you he’s 17. I could put you in handcuffs and put you in the back of a car.”
The officer then walks back to his car with Shortey’s id and the first clip ends. In the next video clip, the officer walks back into the room where Shortey is sitting on the bed while another officer is standing in the room.
Shortey is still acting as if he had no clue of the teenage boy’s age. The officer is heard saying, “I’m telling you he’s 17. Like, I wouldn’t lie to you. What sense would it make me lying to you?” The officer goes on to lecture Shortey on his behavior, warning the disgraced Senator that whatever it is he is doing is a “bad fucking idea.”
Listen, whatever you are doing here… It’s a bad fucking idea! Does that make sense to you? Like, getting high with a young kid, whatever, is a bad idea. No matter if they’re 17 or 20, like, it’s a bad idea. Do you understand what I’m saying? Like, if you wanna have fun by yourself, if you got things you gotta figure out, you need to figure that out then you can live your life however you want. But if you start doing it with kids and stuff, then it becomes a serious, serious problem. Cuz listen to me, if he was a couple years younger, you’d be going to prison. You understand what I’m saying? With no strings attached, we’d be blowing this door up and taking you in our car. You understand what I am saying? You need to be careful about what you’re doing out there. Just like he really needs to second guess his life choices, but you do too because you can get yourself in a bad, bad fucking spot. Do you understand that? Does that make sense?
Police found a series of sexually explicit conversations between Shortey on the teenage boy’s tablet. Shortey called the teen “baby boy” and was offering him cash in exchange for “sexual stuff.”
The FBI searched Shortey’s Oklahoma City house after his arrest. Shortey, who is married with four children, retired from his position in March after being arrested for state charges of engaging in child prostitution and transporting a minor for prostitution.
Last Thursday, Shortey pleaded guilty to the charges after he struck a deal with the prosecutors to drop three child pornography charges. Shortey faces ten years to life in prison and a possible fine of up to $250,000 for child sex trafficking. His sentencing date has yet to be set.
