Video claims to show female officer moments after shooting 26-year-old Botham Shem Jean
A female officer entered Jean’s apartment thinking it was her own
The officer believed Jean was an intruder and fatally shot him
Investigators are seeking a warrant for manslaughter against the officer
In Dallas, Texas a warrant has been issued for manslaughter after an off-duty female police officer walked into her neighbor’s apartment and shot him. It was announced that 26-year-old Botham Shem Jean died from his wound.
In possibly one of the strangest stories behind a police officer related shooting, the officer claims she walked into Jean’s apartment thinking it was her apartment. The female office believed Jean was an intruder and shot him. It is unknown what words were exchanged before the officer shot Jean.
The officer — who has yet to be named — was said to have just finished her shift. While many questions remain about the shooting, investigators have said they are pursuing a manslaughter warrant against the female officer.
After returning to what she claims to have believed was her home, the female officer called dispatch and said she had shot a man. The officer later stated she believed she was in her apartment and believed Jean was an intruder.
When first responders arrived they began administering first aid to Jean. He was taken to a local hospital where he died from the injury. Chief U. Renee Hall said the officer submitted blood for a drug and alcohol test. Hall declined to speculate on issues of fatigue or other factors that would have led to the shooting.
People are upset the officer has not been arrested like any other person would have been. It is hard to believe that a warrant for manslaughter would have to be requested following the officer walking into someone’s apartment and killing them regardless of believing it was their apartment or not. That is an excuse that simply would not stand for a regular citizen who most-likely would have been arrested on the spot.
While questions continue to emerge, a video claims to show the female officer directly after the shooting. The video was shared on Twitter by “PartnersInJustice.” In the video, a female white officer is heard crying and seen walking with a phone in her hand. The officer appears to be very distraught in the video. Towards the end of the video, it appears first responders are wheeling Jean out of the apartment.
