Recently, TDH did an interview with Vanessa Dundon, known better as ‘Sioux Z,’ a first responder for the frontline in Standing Rock who was seriously injured on November 20 when Morton County Sheriff’s Department unleashed a brutal attack against water protectors.

What Happened

Sioux Z was attempting to get a female member of the media off the Blackwater Bridge where police were using tear gas, rubber bullets, mace, concussion grenades, and fire hoses in below freezing temperatures.

It was when Sioux Z was trying to rescue the woman that an officer pointed at her. Moments later another officer fired a tear gas canister directly at her which struck her in the face.

Sioux Z told TDH she did not understand why they would have shot her. It is

the same people on the frontline every day on both sides. She felt as if the officers on the frontline knew her and knew she did not cause problems. Sioux Z would also remove those from the frontline that tried to agitate officers. She had no arrests or problems up to the point of her injury.

Sioux Z was also shot with a rubber bullet

After Sioux Z had been shot with the canister, she grabbed her bandana from her head to place over her face where she was just shot and another officer shot her in the back of her leg with a rubber bullet. At that point, Sioux Z fell to the ground and had to be carried away by two other people.

Sioux Z’s Retina was Severed

Little did Sioux Z know how bad her injury truly was. The tear gas canister severed the retina in her right eye, an injury that will change her life forever.

Sioux Z was recently told that she has less than a 5% chance of ever seeing out of her right eye again. If she does regain vision, it will most likely be some form of light. She is in a lot of pain, but still staying strong following the disheartening news.

Sioux Z has filed a lawsuit against the Morton County Sheriff’s Department. Her lawsuit will most likely be one of many that the department will have to deal with in the months to come.

Sioux Z started a Go Fund Me that has raised over $90,000 to assist with medical fees. If you would like to contribute to Sioux Z’s campaign, you can do so by clicking here.
