Wichita Police Department managed to arrest a man responsible for discharging a firearm just outside the downtown area of the city multiple times before entering his home with four children inside which led to a standoff with police.
At 10:15 pm, WPD received a call of shots fired by the Keeper of the Plains. While officers were investigating, it was reported shortly after shots were heard nearby at Exploration Place.
As police were circling the area they noticed 22-year-old Sir Sumpter with a gun in his hand. Sumpter ran into what turned out to be his residence. The residence is located across from The New Stadium. Trenton Ahnoos — a bartender at The New Stadium — went live from the bar’s parking lot several times as the standoff was going on.
At around 1:00 am, Ahnoos made a post saying that Sumpter was in custody.
Police managed to get three of the four children released from the house, then after negotiating with the residents of the property were able to take Sumpter into custody without any injuries. Sumpter is said to live in the residence with his girlfriend and family members. A stolen firearm was found in the backyard of the residence.
Sumpter is charged with criminal discharge of firearm, criminal use of weapons, possession of stolen property, interference with leo, and criminal threat. Currently, Sumpter is held in Sedgwick County Jail with no bond.
