More details are slowly emerging following an officer-involved shooting that occurred in Aurora, Colorado on Monday morning. During the invasion, the homeowner fatally shot the intruder only to be fatally shot by police.

It is confirmed the homeowner who was killed by police was a decorated Vietnam Veteran and grandfather. The victim’s half-sister posted an image to her Facebook of her half-brother 73-year-old Lt. Richard “Gary” Black receiving the Bronze Star with the First Oak Leaf Cluster, an Army Commendation Medal and a Purple Heart in Ft Gordon, Georgia hospital.

His half-sister—which we have decided to leave anonymous at this time as the family has requested their privacy—described Black as a “wonderful family man who loved spending time with his grandchildren and caring for his garden”. Black’s father was a Staff Sgt. during WWII who fought at the Battle of the Bulge.

The family of Black said he will be remembered as a hero for both his service to his country and to his family that he died protecting. A juvenile inside the home during the invasion was said to have received serious but non-life-threatening injuries from the intruder. The juvenile was taken to a local hospital. Black’s family will be releasing a statement later in the week.

Original Story

On Monday morning, Aurora, Colorado police fatally shot a homeowner who had just fatally shot an intruder inside his home. The shooting appears to be yet another scenario of an officer pulling the trigger before fully analyzing the situation.

Police say they arrived 10609 East Montview Boulevard shortly after 1:30 am. Officers heard shots fired inside the house. Once inside the house, they encountered an armed man. Police shot the man, then later learned he was the homeowner. The homeowner was transported to a local hospital where he died as a result of his injuries.

Police discovered the intruder dead on the bathroom floor. An injured juvenile was also inside the house and transported to the hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries from the intruder.
