False pictures of injured police officers in Mexico spread online as immigrant caravan continues to head towards American border
The three images mainly being spread come from incidents that occurred in 2011 2014 and 2016
Social media is spreading the images without any fact checking
The false images appear to be an attempt to vilify those in the caravan
As a caravan of refugees now estimated to be 14,000 strong heads through Mexico towards the American border, the amount of propaganda spreading online is steadily growing.
A series of images being shared on social media claim to show police officers bloodied and beaten in Mexico after being attacked by the caravan. While many are blindly sharing these images, they are not bothering to fact check the legitimacy beforehand.
The pictures shown are not from the caravan and some even date back as early as 2011. An image of an officer bleeding from his head was originally posted to PSN Primer Sistema de Noticias article on June 18, 2016.
The image was from a violent clash between residents in Salina Cruz, in the region of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec, and Federal Police.
The Human Rights Center “Tepeyac” of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec, and the Network of Defenders and Community Defenders of the Peoples of Oaxaca, defined the two days of clashes between civilians and federal forces as “the wrong answer; as a hallmark of a state that seeks to perpetuate itself in the logic of power and confrontation, instead of propitiating spaces for dialogue that open up causes for a fractured democracy.”
Another image of an officer bleeding from his nose came from an article from OAXACA entrelineas that was published on February 17, 2011. Following the incident, State Governor Gabino Cué Monteagudo offered an apology to the residence of “Oaxaca for the grievances caused by “police and teachers” during their clash last Tuesday in the city’s Zócalo and reiterated their willingness to engage in a new dialogue with Section 22 of the SNTE.”
A third image shows an officer crawling in the street comes from El Universal NATION on December 15, 2014. The image came from a clash between people and relatives of 43 missing people and Federal Police. In total eight officers and 17 civilians were injured.
However, the hooded group detected that in the Diplomatic Hotel, located on street before the Real del Sol, there were federal policemen and they went for them.
