Nothing rings in the holidays better than leaving your loved ones on Thanksgiving to fight with strangers in an attempt to score a TV at a reduced price. This year there were at least three mall shootings and one stabbing as people chose to embrace the spirit of Black Friday.
On Thursday at Alabama’s largest enclosed mall a shooting broke out just before 10:00 pm. The shooting stemmed from a confrontation between a 21-year-old and an 18-year-old at the Riverchase Galleria in Birmingham. Near the Footaction and JC Penney stores on the second floor the 21-year-old shot the younger victim twice in the torso.
Police do not know the reason the confrontation began but said the victim was not armed. An armed Hoover police officer confronted the gunman and fatally shot him as he ran away. A 12-year-old girl who was an innocent bystander was also shot in the arm. Both victims were taken to the hospital. The girl had surgery and did “not have life-threatening injuries,” according to Hoover Police Captain Gregg Rector. The 18-year-old was taken to the hospital in serious condition but expected to live.
Just hours earlier at the Oak Court Mall in Memphis, Tennessee, a man was reportedly shot in the parking lot after a “glance” at a woman. The victim told police he spotted an “attractive woman” inside the mall but continued walking. Once the victim and his cousin got outside they began fighting with a man who was with the woman.
According to police, the victim was knocked out and being pulled to his feet when he got shot. Matthew Morgan witnessed the fight and the shooting and began shooting his own weapon to stop the incident. It is not clear if Morgan fired at the suspects, or into the air. The bullet only grazed the victim and Morgan was arrested for unlawful possession of a weapon.
In Syracuse, New York at 4:13 pm on Friday, two people were stabbed inside a Macy’s in Destiny USA. Officers located two men in their 20s suffering from stab wounds. One victim was stabbed in his abdomen and the other was stabbed in his back. Both victims were transported to Upstate University Hospital for treatment with non-life threatening injuries. Destiny USA released the following statement.
Safety is our highest priority at Destiny USA. The isolated incident that took place inside of Macy’s is absolutely unacceptable and will not be tolerated. We are cooperating fully and actively participating with the Syracuse Police in the ongoing investigation. While this incident undermines the tireless efforts by our security team, community partners and local law enforcement agencies that make Destiny USA a year-round family friendly destination, it only strengthens our resolve to remain vigilant and committed to providing a safe environment for our guests, employees and tenants.

At around 8:00 pm on Friday, a third shooting occurred at The Mills in Jersey Gardens in Elizabeth, New Jersey. Elizabeth Mayor Chris Bollwage said a customer had been shot in his wrist between the Tommy Hilfiger and Marshalls stores shortly after 8:00 pm.
No suspect has been apprehended and the victim is not cooperating on identifying the suspect. Police are reviewing camera footage. The mall has been evacuated and all shoppers are out. No one is in danger at the moment.
