Texas Rep. Joe Barton R-Texas has a nude picture leaked on Twitter
On Wednesday Barton issued an apology for his behavior and for letting his fellow constituents down
Hours after his apology, The Washington Post reported that in 2015 Barton threatened to call Capitol police on a woman saying she was going to expose him
Barton says the woman was angry that he was ending their relationship and threatened to publicize sexually explicit material he had sent her
In Texas it is a misdemeanor to publicize an image or video of someone’s genitals without permission
Texas Representative Joe Barton, R-Texas has apologized after a sexually explicit picture of him showed up on Twitter earlier this week.
The picture came from an anonymous account. The picture currently going around is two pictures put into one. The first picture shows Barton in a explicit selfie, but his genitals were censored. The second video shows a screen shot from a message that reads, “From: Joe B. I want u soo bad. Right Now. Deep and hard.” The date say March 13, 1:29 pm, but it is not clear what year as the phone appears older.
Barton, the vice chairman of the House Energy and Commerce Committee, said that he was reconsidering his political career after the image went viral. He is the longest-serving member of the Texas congressional delegation and just early this month told The Dallas Morning News, “I’m the odd duck who didn’t quit.”
The Washington Post
On Wednesday, Barton, 68, issued an apology for his behavior. However, hours after his apology, The Washington Post reported that in 2015, he threatened to report a woman he had shared sexually explicit material with to Capitol police if she exposed him. The woman spoke to Washington Post anonymously but shared a recording of a phone call between her and Barton.
Barton threatened to tell investigators that:
I had a three-year undercover relationship with you over the Internet that was heavily sexual and that I had met you twice while married and had sex with you on two different occasions and that I exchanged inappropriate photographs and videos with you that I wouldn’t like to be seen made public, that you still apparently had all of those and were in position to use them in a way that would negatively affect my career.
Barton has not denied the claims made by the woman. Instead, he focused on her threatening to “publicly share” his “private photographs and intimate correspondence” as revenge for ending their relationship. The Congressman believes that he may be a victim of a crime, since the relationship was consensual and the woman was threatening to publicize sexual material he sent her.
In Texas, it is a misdemeanor to intentionally publicize images of someone’s genitals without permission under the “revenge pornography law.”
As the transcript reflects, I offered to take the matter to the Capitol Hill Police to open an investigation. Today, the Capitol Police reached out to me and offered to launch an investigation and I have accepted. Because of the pending investigation, we will have no further comment.
Barton stated that he had consensual “sexual relationships with other mature adult women” while separated from his wife. He went on to say that he let his constituents down and that these past relationships have ended.
It is reported that aside from the recorded phone conversation, the anonymous woman also has message exchanges and a video of Barton masturbating. The Washington Post said the picture on Twitter is a still shot from the video of Barton masturbating.
