A petition on Care2 has gained the support of over 70,000 people looking to save two Huskies, Polar and Bear, following an incident where a 4-year-old boy in Utah lost one of his hands after putting a sock on his hand and sticking his arm under the fence.

The incident occurred on Sunday afternoon. The boy was in his backyard trying to play with the two Huskies through the fence. Layton City Police PIO Jason Cook told PEOPLE the unnamed child put a sock over his hand then put his arm under the fence. With the sock over his hand, the Huskies are believed to have thought the boy’s arm was a toy.

Bear reportedly bit down with tremendous force, severing the boy’s hand just above the wrist. The father was inside the house when the incident happened. He made a call to 911 saying his son’s hand had been ripped off. The child was taken by helicopter to a hospital in Salt Lake City and was said to be recovering from surgery on Sunday night.

Around ten emergency workers arrived on the scene to try and recover the missing limb. Workers were not able to find the limb. Police believe one of the dogs may have “ingested” the limb.

The owner of the dogs claims they are “docile pets that have never demonstrated any aggression.” The incident was the dogs’ “first bite incident.” According to the petition, Polar and Bear are both currently in quarantine, even though Bear is said to be responsible for the bite. Both dogs are being held at Davis County Animal Control, and the petition claims there is fear that Bear may be put down.

My best friends dog was involved in an unfortunate accident yesterday where a little boy stuck his arm through a fence and he had a sock on his arm. Bear who was playing with what he thought was a toy he bit down too hard and didn’t see that there was a child on the other side of the fence. With him being a dog he thought it was a game of tug of war and he bit down too hard and took a lower portion of his arm. This situation is unfortunate on both sides. And now both dogs are in quarantine at Davis county animal control. There are fears that bear might be put down and he doesn’t deserve to be put down for this freak accident.

The petition was started by Jessica Nusz, who says she is “best friends” with the dogs’ owner. So far, Nusz’s petition has gained 72,790 out of the 100,000 signature goal. Nusz also started a Go Fund Me campaign to get the dogs out of animal control. The campaign had a $400 goal, which it quickly reached then stopped accepting donations.

I am creating this go fund me to help my best friend get her pups back from animal control.
