Four charged with hate crime after kidnapping and beating a mentally disabled man in Chicago

Jordan Hill, Tesfaye Cooper, Brittany Covington, and Tanishia Covington all charged with hate crimes after kidnapping and abusing a mentally handicapped man

  • The victim and his parents believed he was going to a sleepover with Jordan Hill

  • The suspects posted videos of the attack to their social media

  • The victim was able to escape after two of the suspects left to confront a neighbor

Just days ago Chicago police witnessed a white male walking down the street bloodied and disorientated. Despite the freezing weather, he was only wearing a tank top that was inside out and backward with jean shorts.

Little did officers know the man was mentally disabled and just escaped his captors after being held against his will for 24 to 48 hours. In that time the man was beaten, kicked, forced to drink toilet water, and had his scalp cut with a knife while his captors yelled hate speech at the terrified and confused man.

To make matters even worse, his captors decided to livestream the abuse to Facebook and Twitter.

Jordan Hill, 18, of Carpentersville; Tesfaye Cooper, 18, of Chicago; Brittany Covington, 18, of Chicago; and Tanishia Covington, 24, of Chicago are all charged with aggravated kidnapping, hate crime; aggravated unlawful restraint; aggravated battery deadly weapon; robbery; PSMV and residential burglary.

Police reported that the kidnapping occurred on the 3400 block of West Lexington on the West Side. The four were charged with a hate crime due to saying “Fuck white people,” and making references to the man’s mental capacity on Covington’s livestream.

The Sleepover

On December 31, Hill met the victim at a suburban McDonald’s for what the victim and his parents believed was going to be a sleepover, according to police.

Hill instead drove the victim around in a stolen van for a couple of days before ending up at two of the suspect’s home in Chicago. The victim told police that the incident began with¬†what he thought was playful fighting.

The playful fighting soon escalated to the victim being bound and abused while his captors hurled insults at him about his race and his mental capacity.

The Video

On Covington’s video, the victim is repeatedly attacked while the suspects yell “Fuck Trump,” “Fuck white people,” and repeatedly call him a “goof” along with other names.

In another video, that surfaced after the first one, the suspects force the victim to drink toilet water. They also make him kiss the floor and threaten to “shank” him. The confused and frightened man clearly does not know how to handle the situation and is reported to still be traumatized from the situation.

On Covington’s livestream, one of the suspects is seen taking a knife and cutting a chunk of the victim’s hair, along with his scalp. Covington shows a close-up of the injury and one of the suspects is heard yelling, “Is it leaking?”

Covington’s livestream is roughly 25 minutes long. In it, her little sister comments that they are going to go to jail, which the suspects respond with a laugh. When others began questioning what the suspects were doing, Covington begins to get more hostile with those calling the group out for their actions.

The Escape

After being held for an estimated 24 to 48 hours, a downstairs neighbor heard noises and threatened to call the police. Two of the suspects went to kick down the neighbor’s door, and the victim saw his opportunity to escape. That was when the victim managed to leave the house before being found by police shortly after.

Aside from the racial slurs that were used during the attack, in Illinois, you can be charged with a hate crime for attacking someone due to their mental disability.

While it is unclear what provoked the attack, police say that the suspects may have been trying to extort a ransom from the family. The victim’s parents reported him missing on Monday, and claimed they got text messages from people claiming to be holding the victim captive.
