On Sunday, the world was shocked when 37-year-old Steve Stephens shot and killed 74-year-old Robert Godwin Sr. on video. Stephens then uploaded the video to his Facebook account, “Stevie Steve,” along with other videos.
Police originally believed that Stephens had used the Facebook LIVE feature to record the murder. A Facebook spokesperson said early Monday that Stephens recorded the video to his cell phone then later uploaded it to Facebook.
“She’s The Reason This Is About To, Um, Happen To You”
In the video of the shooting, Stephens asked Godwin to say the name “Joy Lane.” Godwin seems confused with the request, to which Stephens responds, “she’s the reason this is about to, um, happen to you.”
Stephens asks Godwin how old he is as he pulls out a gun. Godwin pleads with Stephens, telling him that he does not even know who the woman is. Stephens shoots Godwin then says, “that motha fucker dead because of you Joy.”
Stephens uploaded two other videos in which he put the majority of the blame on Lane for his actions. Stephens claims Lane got him into gambling which caused him to lose everything.
Since the shooting, Lane has deleted her Facebook account and has been placed in police protective custody. Many have been left wondering, who is Joy Lane?
Lane, who is also known as Joy Carr, is a Clinical Supervisor at Murtis Taylor Human Services System clinic in Cleveland. In specific, “Lane is a Children’s Behavioral Health department and in charge of leading a community-based team of Therapists and Community Psychiatric Supportive Treatment (CPST) workers.”
Lane has also worked as a Clinical Supervisor for Mature Services and as a Case Manager/Therapist at Beech Brook, where Stephens was a case manager before Sunday’s shooting.
Since 1852, Beech Brook has been helping Northeast Ohio’s most vulnerable children and families. Over the past year, Beech Brook’s staff served 20,000 children and families. From prevention and early intervention programs to intensive treatment for the most seriously disturbed youth, Beech Brook helps to heal troubled children and strengthen families through these and other services.
Following the shooting, Lane spoke to CBS News via text message. In the text, she explains that she and Stephens were in a relationship for several years. She even goes on to say that Stephens is a “really nice guy.”
We had been in a relationship for several years. I am sorry that all of this has happened. My heart & prayers goes out to the family members of the victim(s). Steve really is a nice guy…he is generous with everyone he knows. He was kind and loving to me and my children. This is a very difficult time for me and my family Please respect our privacy at this time.
Before Lane deleted her Facebook account, she made a post letting people know she was in police custody.
This is the fastest way to update everybody. I am safe and with the police. I am Not okay… this is a lot. I can’t believe this is happening. I am very sad for everyone involved. I am praying for them and I am praying for Steve. He needs help.
Stephens claimed to a have committed upwards of a dozen murders on Facebook Sunday, but police say they have not connected any other shootings to Stephens at this time.
Stephens is still on the run. Police say he could be in Pennsylvania, New York, Indiana or Michigan. The last confirmed location of Stephens was at 635 East 93rd Street about 2:00 p.m on Sunday where Godwin was shot.
Stephens was last known to be driving a white Ford Fusion with temporary Ohio tags. The temporary Ohio tag is E363630. As of early Monday afternoon there have been no confirmed sightings of Stephens.
