Democratic candidate Douglas Jones beats Republican Roy Moore in Alabama Senate Race
The victory makes Jones the first Democrat to represent Alabama in Senate in 20 years
Moore’s campaign was plagued with sexual assault accusations from women that were teenagers at the time of the incidents
President Donald Trump sent out a “robo-call” telling people to vote for Moore on Monday night
A considerable upset occurred in Alabama Tuesday night, as Democratic candidate Douglas Jones beat Republican Roy Moore in the Alabama Senate Race. Jones is the first Democrat to represent Alabama in the Senate in 20 years. Jones filled the vacant seat left by Attorney General Jeff Sessions.
Jones is a former US attorney who is known for prosecuting two members of the Ku Klux Klan in the 1963 church bombing in Birmingham. Moore is a former judge who was removed from office twice before he decided to run for Senate.
During his campaign, Moore was hit with multiple allegations that he pursued relationships with teenagers when he was in his thirties. One woman had claimed Moore touched her sexually when she was 14-years-old. Another woman claimed Moore sexually assaulted her when she was 16-years-old while he was still a district attorney. While Moore denied the accusations, high-profile Republicans like Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell believed the women.
Despite Moore’s failed past as a judge and the accusations he is currently facing, President Donald Trump threw his full support behind the Republican candidate. Trump even put together a “robo-call” telling people to vote for Moore.
Hi, this is President Donald Trump and I need Alabama to go vote for Roy Moore. It is so important. We’re already making America great again. I’m going to make America safer, and stronger, and better than ever before, but we need that seat and we need Roy voting for us. I’m stopping illegal immigration and crime, rebuilding a stronger military and protecting the second amendment and our pro-life values. But if Alabama elects liberal Democrat Doug Jones, all of our progress will be stopped cold. We already know Democrat Doug Jones is a puppet of Nancy Pelosi and Chuck Schumer, and he will vote with the Washington liberals every single time.
Democrat Jones is soft on crime, weak on immigration, supports abortion, he’s bad for our military and bad for our vets. We don’t want him, and he also, by the way, wants higher taxes. Roy Moore is the guy we need to pass our “Make America Great Again” agenda. Roy is a conservative who’ll help me steer this country back on track after eight years of the Obama disaster. Get out and vote for Roy Moore. His vote is our Republican Senate, and it’s needed. We need Roy to help us with the Republican Senate. We will win and we will make America great again.
Along with his “robo-call,” on Monday evening, Trump tweeted, “The people of Alabama will do the right thing. Doug Jones is Pro-Abortion, weak on Crime, Military and Illegal Immigration, Bad for Gun Owners and Veterans and against the WALL. Jones is a Pelosi/Schumer Puppet. Roy Moore will always vote with us. VOTE ROY MOORE!”
Trump confirmed that Jones won in a tweet on Tuesday night. “Congratulations to Doug Jones on a hard fought victory. The write-in votes played a very big factor, but a win is a win. The people of Alabama are great, and the Republicans will have another shot at this seat in a very short period of time. It never ends!”
Some believe Jones’ victory could be a warning of what’s to come. Between Trump’s poor approval rating and a growing anger towards the Republican party as a whole, Moore’s loss could be a sign that Democrats can flip the U.S. House of Representatives and possibly even the Senate in 2018.
