In the days following the domestic terrorist attack in Charlottesville, Virginia, social media sites have become a virtual battlefield that almost resembles a lost scene from the Inglourious Basterds, with the white supremacist media outlet Daily Stormer being the main target.

Following the death of Heather Heyer, Andrew Anglin, founder of the Daily Stormer, published a vile article celebrating her death that quickly went viral. The sheer lack of empathy towards Heyer quickly made the Daily Stormer and their associates the target of hackers across the Web.

Doxxing those associated with the Daily Stormer has become more popular than going after those associated with the Westboro Baptist Church after they announced they would be protesting the funerals of victims killed in the Sandy Hook shooting.

At one point, the Internet rejoiced after it was believed that Anonymous had hacked the Daily Stormer, but it has now been ruled nothing more than a publicity stunt from those behind the site.

At the same timeline of the supposed hack, Go Daddy announced in a Twitter response that they had given Daily Stormer 24 hours to move their site to a new host. The site was offline for the majority of Monday and currently remains offline. Following Go Daddy’s lead, Google also denied Daily Stormer registration on Monday.

Andrew Weev Auernheimer

It is no secret that Andrew Auernheimer, better known as “Weev,” has played a vital role in keeping the Daily Stormer online. According to Auernheimer’s Facebook, he is the “Chief Technology Officer at Daily Stormer.”

Auernheimer was not always the Chief Technology Officer of a white supremacist website. In fact, he was at one time looked at an Internet troll turned hero after he became a victim of the inhumane criminal laws hackers face in America.

Auernheimer was once a part of an Internet security group known as “Goatse Security.” In June of 2010, just days after the release of the original Apple iPad, Goatse Security discovered that AT&T had a huge security flaw. The company had accidentally made email addresses of subscribers to its iPad 3G wireless service accessible to the public.

Goatse Security managed to acquire over 100,000 emails due to the security flaw from an AT&T website using a program called “account slurper.” After obtaining the emails, Auernheimer contacted Gawker then-staff writer Ryan Tate with evidence of the security breach.

On Jan. 18, 2011, the feds kicked in Auernheimer’s door following an FBI investigation into Goatse Security. At the time of the raid, Auernheimer was living in his birthplace of Fayetteville, Arkansas. Auernheimer was arrested and charged with one count of conspiracy to gain unauthorized access computer and one count of identity theft. Daniel Spitler, a fellow member of Goatse Security, was also arrested in retaliation for the AT&T hack.

Do Not Feed The Trolls

Auernheimer had already acquired a certain amount of Internet fame by the time of his arrest. Across the Web, Auernheimer was known for his trolling. In 2008, the New York Times featured Auernheimer in a magazine profile about internet trolling, the art of provoking online for provocation’s sake.

Despite facing pretty serious charges, Auernheimer basked in the glory of his AT&T hack. Auernheimer spent the majority of his time basking in the glory of the hack in seclusion. He enjoyed watching the real-time searches for Goatse on Twitter and getting a chuckle out of those looking for information on the hack, but instead found themselves face to face with the legendary Internet picture of a man known as Goatse stretching his asshole open.

Auernheimer laughed to himself as thousands were “Goatse’d” that day, which quickly made the AT&T hack one of his greatest trolls. As it turns out, that is all it was. Auernheimer never personally hacked anything. Aside from AT&T screwing up and posting the information to a public area of the Web, Spitler wrote the program used to collect the emails. Auernheimer simply handled the media aspect the hack.

Auernheimer Found Guilty

Many argued that Auernheimer did not commit a crime, as it was entirely AT&T’s fault for making such an amateur mistake with their client’s information. However, in November of 2012, the jury felt Auernheimer was to blame, and he was sentenced to three and a half years in prison.

In 2014, Auernheimer was released from prison after his conviction was overturned, but something had changed while he was incarcerated. The former Internet troll returned with a dark and twisted racially charged view of the world. He blamed the Jews and his black judge for his conviction. His Internet presence changed from that of provocative trolling to dangerous hate speech.

From Troll To Racist

Before his sentencing, Auernheimer’s trolling had a strong racist undertone. He was a former president of a longstanding Internet trolling organization known as the “Gay Niggers Association of America.” The GNAA took their name from a satirical Danish cult film titled “Gayniggers from Outer Space.” The organization prided themselves on pissing people off and fooling conservative outlets with fake Twitter accounts.

After Auernheimer was released from prison, his antisemitic views became painfully clear. He gave a slight glimpse into the possibility of antisemitic views in an interview with Gawker before his sentencing. During the interview, Auernheimer stated that he believed “Jews have power in this country and I fight powerful people. Jews, in general, have power over media and banking. Ergo, I will make fun of them on the internet.”

Auernheimer revealed he was a white nationalist in an article on the Daily Stormer in October of 2014. The article showed pictures of his tattoos, that includes a swastika on his chest. Auernheimer also spoke of his time in jail, which included hours of screaming Edda, an Old Norse term used to describe two Medieval Icelandic literary works, and “scrawling runes on the concrete walls.”

Jewish Ancestry

What makes Auernheimer’s decent into the antisemitic underbelly of the Web is that before he went to prison, he self-admittedly claimed to be of Jewish decent on more than one occasion. In his November 2012, interview with Gawker, Auernheimer claimed to be of Jewish descent. However, he later placed the blame on Gawker for misconstruing information during the interview.

Auernheimer once again claimed to be of Jewish descent in an archived OkCupid post made in December of 2012. Following a quote from Adolf Hitler, Auernheimer wrote, “As an ethnic Jew of Bavarian origins that is a reasonably adequate summary of my night moves.”

Some believe that Auernheimer made the claims of Jewish ancestry in a desperate attempt to help his upcoming legal battle. Auernheimer was known to mix true and false aspects of his life with his vast knowledge of different topics throughout history and from around the world.

Biella Coleman, a professor of anthropology at McGill University became familiar with Auernheimer through her research on trolls and hackers. Coleman told Gawker, “Not everything he says is true, not everything he says is false. That’s what makes it so difficult and disorienting to talk to him.”

Auernheimer is known to mix his vast knowledge of Greek history, world religions and contemporary U.S. anti-government extremists with questionable details about his life.

Goatse Security

Years before his court date was approaching for his role in the AT&T hack, Auernheimer hinted to his Jewish descent in a post on Goatse Security in July of 2010.

Any attempt to brand me an anti-Semite is idiotic. I have no problem with any person solely because of their Semitic descent. Take a look at my last name, “Auernheimer”. Think about the likely origins of this name for a second. Even a quick Google reveals its origins. The most famous Auernheimer of history, journalist and author Raoul Auernheimer, had his way bought from the fires of Dachau by his uncle, Theodore Herzl himself. Come on, I have curly hair and brown eyes here. The claim many “journalists” are making that I am some sort of Nazi is preposterous, but I suppose you have to resort to ad hominem when the public overwhelmingly supported me on the basis of the facts of the case.

No Longer Of Jewish Descent

Since linking up with Anglin and the Daily Stormer, Auernheimer has refuted the claim that he is of Jewish descent. The Daily Stormer is known for placing the blame on Jews for almost everything wrong in the world today, so naturally, Auernheimer having Jewish ancestry could prove to be a problem given how involved he has become in the antisemitic movement.

The question of Auernheimer himself being of Jewish descent is one that we may never be able to answer. Aside from being involved with the antisemitic movement, at heart Auernheimer is still a troll who lives to amuse only himself. In a sense, his humor is best compared to the late Andy Kaufman who did not care if anybody else got the joke as long as he was entertained by the outrage caused by his actions. However, Auernheimer is not a comedian trying to piss off an audience; he is a prominent figure in a racist and hate fueled movement that has already claimed one life and has the capability to claim more.
