Mercedes Grabowski, an adult film star more commonly known as August Ames, was found dead in Southern California on Tuesday. The Ventura County Medical Examiner confirmed the death but has yet to release the cause.
It is reported that those close to Ames believe she may have taken her own life. Those who knew Ames claimed the 23-year-old battled with depression. Some feel like a recent incident online may have sparked Ames to commit suicide.
On December 3, Ames sent out a tweet that many said was an attack towards the gay community. In the tweet, Ames warned whoever was “replacing” her in a scene with Erotica X would be working with a gay man.
whichever (lady) performer is replacing me tomorrow for @EroticaXNews , you’re shooting with a guy who has shot gay porn, just to let cha know. BS is all I can say♀ Do agents really not care about who they’re representing? #ladirect I do my homework for my body✏️
The response to Ames’ tweet came extremely fast and was very brutal. Twitter users hammered Ames for an apology, stating that all adult film actors and actresses go through the same screening, so Ames clearly had to be refusing to do the scene because she was homophobic.
Instead of issuing an apology, Ames made another tweet to defend herself from the accusations that she was homophobic. Ames stated that she did not know what the gay men were doing during their “private time,” and she did not want to put her body at risk. Statistics show that gay men have a higher chance of receiving HIV and other STDs from sexual interactions.
NOT homophobic. Most girls don’t shoot with guys who have shot gay porn, for safety. That’s just how it is with me. I’m not putting my body at risk, i don’t know what they do in their private lives.
In two more tweets on December 3, Ames continued to defend her actions, bringing up a very strong argument that she had done multiple lesbian scenes and personally just did not feel comfortable being with a man that does same-sex scenes, which in all fairness, is 100% her choice.
Ames continued to tweet in her defense of her decision for the next few days leading up to her death. Her last tweet was on December 4 and simply read, “fuck y’all.”
One of Ames last tweets rang out louder than the rest. It spoke of an industry that she felt had brutally betrayed her. Her Twitter account has well over 500,000 followers, In total, Ames had well 1,500 comments on tweets related to the topic of her being homophobic, the majority of which was negative.
“‘Choose who YOU want to work with’
‘Don’t do anything that makes you feel uncomfortable’
‘Share your thoughts’
Hmm. Well, I did all three, and twitter took a dump on me♀.”
Editor’s Note: Out of respect for Ames and her loved ones, The Daily Haze has opted out of posting any of the negative tweets, but we can assure you they do exist and some are extremely hateful.
