Four arrests were made in Wichita, Kansas after a 19-year-old homeless man was tied to a pole and beaten by three adults and one teenage male.
The incident occurred Friday morning in the 1100 block of North St. Francis. On Friday afternoon, 20-year-old Timothy Karl Larson was arrested and charged with aggravated kidnapping and battery. Larson is held on a $100,000 bond.
Along with Larson, 18-year-old Shelby Emma Saxton was arrested and charged with aggravated kidnapping and battery, and 20-year-old Vance Diamond Halsey was charged with aggravated kidnapping. An unnamed 16-year-old was arrested and charged with aggravated kidnapping and battery.
The four arrests were made two blocks away from the scene of the incident. It was reported that the four suspects knew the victim. The victim was said to have sustained minor injuries from the attack.
These attacks against the homeless are more common than one would like to believe. In March, attorney Belkis Plata heard a commotion outside her law office on W Adams in Jacksonville, Florida. Once outside, Plata saw a group of people arguing with the man before one of the suspects punched the man, knocking him out.
After the man was knocked out, Plata called 911 and began recording the incident. As the man laid knocked out, another man came up and began kicking him. Plata told local news that multiple people walked by without helping the man. The man’s head was bleeding, so Plata applied pressure while waiting for paramedics to arrive on the scene.
In January, a 29-year-old homeless man in New York was attacked by a group of 20 to 30 while on a northbound A-train at 9:30 pm. A 16-year-old boy and a 16-year-old girl were arrested for the crime. The victim reportedly sustained minor injuries to his face.
In Silver Springs, Maryland, on September 24, 2017, 27-year-old Marquis Evans-Royster attacked a 52-year-old disabled homeless man on a Metrobus. Evans-Royster told the victim “You owe me for making my grandmother a slave.” Witnesses tried to intervene in the attack, at which point Evans-Royster spat in the victim’s face and threatened to throw a cup full of urine on him.
Also in September 2017, a homeless man was beaten to the point that he was placed on life support in San Diego, California. The attack happened in City Heights, near Highland Park. 46-year-old Somphan Bangphraxay was found laying on a public sidewalk in City Heights. Initially, police believed that Bangphraxay had overdosed on drugs until internal bleeding was discovered after he arrived at the hospital.
Police believed Bangphraxay was possibly struck with a blunt object. Locals claimed that Bangphraxay had been staying on the streets in the area for roughly six months before the attack. Physicians stated the injuries appeared to be from an attack and declared the man would not survive his injuries.
